THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING’S HISTORIC ALFORD ANTENNA TO BE SHOWCASED AT AES NEW YORK
New York, NY (July 01, 2019) – The Empire State Building today announced that it has gifted one of its Alford antennas to the Audio Engineering Society for display at AES New York 2019, the 147th Audio Engineering Society International Convention.
Since its opening in 1931, the Empire State Building has been on the cusp of innovation. When the Alford Antenna was installed in December 1965, it was the first combined radio FM antenna system that allowed up to sixteen stations to broadcast simultaneously. As a result, the Empire State Building was able to reach to one of the largest markets in the United States.
As the Alford Antenna is one of the most significant technological advancements in broadcasting history, the antenna will be on display at AES New York, which takes places at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Center in October 2019
“The Alford Antenna was an important part of what made broadcasting as we know it today possible, and the Empire State Building is excited to share this special piece of history with the Audio Engineering Society,” said Anthony E. Malkin, Chairman and CEO of Empire State Realty Trust.
The Empire State Building currently operates with an ERI modern antenna with the capability to broadcast 19 stations simultaneously for digital audio. The Alford Antenna that was used until recently as a backup system was removed in April 2019.
